Sunglasses

Many people think of sunglasses as an accessory. Indeed, they certainly can be. At Northern Valley Eye Care, Inc. however, we also think of sunglasses as preventative medicine much like sunblock for the eyes. Just as UV light attacks and damages our skin, it also attacks and damages vital tissue in our eyes. UV light has been documented to cause or increase the progression of Cataracts, Macular Degeneration, and Eyelid Cancers. All of our sunglasses are UV-A and UV-B protective

We also have frames that come with magnetic sunclips. Bear in mind that many prescriptive lenses can be made into transitions.

Lens Polarization is an important consideration when buying sunglasses.

Polarized Sunglasses – reduce glare from reflective surfaces such as the surface of water or the hood of a car much like a set of blinds on your window.

Sunlight itself is not polarized, It is reflected horizontally, diagonally, or vertically. The problem that fishermen and drivers face lies in the horizontal reflectivity. Sunlight bouncing off a horizontal surface will strike our eyes at a similar angle. Polarized lenses have a laminated surface containing vertical stripes. These stripes only allow vertically-polarized light to enter the wearer’s eyes. Glare is eliminated because the horizontally-polarized lightwaves cannot bypass the polarized filter. Fishermen wearing polarized sunglasses can see below the surface of the water to search for schools of fish or hidden obstacles. Drivers are not affected by a constant reflection of light from their hoods or the road ahead.

There are limitations to the use of polarized lenses. Drivers and Pilots may discover that polarized lenses can cause distortion to their LCD screens.
